Avoid and find a Registrar
CON: Hostway went downhill after teaming up with Domainpeople and Netnation. They only offer telephone support if you are thinking of buying, and after that it's downhill. Tickets and emails take days and transferring out to another Registrar is like pulling teeth from a bear.
PRO: A better GUI than Netfirms, and Godaddy. It isn't cluttered with ads, and superfluous -stuff-. It's designed to re-new, not, remove so if you don't mind being stuck there ---. Transfers out, transfers in can be a real problem. because of the time it takes, give yourself 30 days lead time to transfer in, or out. Also, watch renewing early. I found that if I renew a week in advance, it becomes the next renewal date in 365 days, losing a week.

Register with Hostway if you want to LOSE YOUR DOMAIN!
I have used Hostway in the past and because the price was good, I kept using them. Hostway was a different Hostway not long ago. It might have something to do with their merger with Affinity. OK, maybe a LOT to do with that. Their service used to excel. Used to get a hold of customer service and support readily. I used to have an account rep! Then it started going downhill. Until this incident, I was willing to put up with the pain.
Just so you know, Hostway isn't a registrar. They've partnered up with DomainPeople.com so your domain names are actually registered by the second company.
Registering multiple domains is a pain with Hostway. Even registering one domain is not a simple process. If you've gone through the process before, you know where you're going. If you're a new user, you'll find the process unintuitive.
I put in a large order for domain names on 8/13/07. Got my receipt and order confirmation emails. For the next three days... nothing. I checked my account and none of the names I registered showed up yet. I did quick searches for a handful of the domains I registered with other registrars and they all still say "available". That concerned me, so I called Hostway.
The good thing is you can call Hostway, but my wait time has consistently been between 30-45 minutes, so you'd better have patience. Oh, and Hostway's departments don't talk to each other. I have a sneakin' suspicion that they're in different parts of the world.
Anyway, Sales said Customer Service was closed but my order was pending and being processed. The sales rep assured me that other people can't register my domains as they're being processed. So I asked why then are they still showing up as "available" through other registrars. I said I went through a mock ordering process with another registrar and and I got all the way to where they asked for my credit card to place the order. He put me on hold. Then he came back and said I had to call Customer Service the next day. He couldn't answer me.
I sent an email to dnr@hostway.com saying if I lost any domains due to their slow process and someone else registers them, I will not be happy.
Finally, the morning of 8/16/07, my domains start coming in... all except one! I had lost one. One crucial one that was meant to be a part of a series. I checked the whois. Guess when that domain was registered? 8/16/07. That domain was supposed to be mine. I put my order in on 8/13/07!!!
I am HIGHLY UNSATISFIED... to put it lightly.
If you really don't care whether you get your domain name, go ahead, give Hostway a try. I'm going to go elsewhere for domain name registrations. The bottom line is, I'm willing to pay more for better service. Hmmm... sounds familiar. I wonder why that hasn't got through to the new guys at Hostway. They changed a good thing and made it worse. Worst Domain Registrar
Hostway is the worst domain registrar I have ever dealt with.
Firstly, it took me about full 3 days to register a .com from them.
Secondly, they keep on asking for my credit card details again and again.
Support and Billing departments referred me to each other every now and then.
Support and Billing departments took well more than 48 hours to get back to me and even their mails look unprofessional, does not even mentioning the name of support representative.
The price is a bit satisfactory for the first 3 names you register with them, but they seriously are not even worth it.
I would never waste my time and money with them ever again. Collapse
