Consumer-grade Garbage
I have handled domain names for clients that were
registered hosted by 1and1. There are many
fundamental problems with their system, with their
customer support, their management. It took 10
days for them to release ownership of a domain
name for one of my clients. GoDaddy did this
within a few hours. There was "nothing further
they could do" to speed up the process.
If you are working with a hosting account at
1and1, and a domain name hosted on a different
1and1, THERE IS NO WAY TO POINT THE DOMAIN NAME AT
YOUR HOSTING SERVICE WITH AN A RECORD. Their
custom administration panel is dysfunctional in
this sense. Even though the hosting is running
Apache, there is no way to set up a name-based
rule with an .htaccess file. You simple cannot
point a domain name on account A, at the hosting
on account B. The only way to make it work is to
transfer ownership of the domain (this will take
them 10 days to do), or to use something terrible
like forwarding or redirecting.
I have spoken to several of their customer service
representatives over the phone. The call center is
located within the Philippines, and they are not
easy to understand. Collapse

1 and 1 promises a lot. However, when it comes time to cancel, things go wrong. Then, when you don't pay, they send account out to collection, even after not communicating with you about your account. It is a low form of extortion. If this happens to you, you MUST file a complaint with the BBB and the Pennsylvania Attorney General. Yeah, I know you don't want to be bothered, but if you don't, 1 and 1 will continue to abuse its customers that no longer need the service.
By the way, the BBB gives this company a rating of F. Yes, an F!! The lowest rating possible.
Protect youself by not doing business with this company. Collapse

Absolutely the worst registrar as far as transfers go. It's a "Hotel California" situation - you can check out, but you can never leave. I've attempted to transfer my domain away, and after technical support on both ends said it would be a very easy process, 1 and 1 has yet to release it. It's been well over a week, and my website has many faithful users that are getting disappointed. I would recommend to steer clear of this host at all costs. Collapse

1&1.com sucks!
I had 2 domains with them, but being that I was new to all this I paid the full domain registration & hosting fees. When it came time for renewal, they simply whacked a notch out of my credit card account. Contacting them was difficult so I left them with an email which never was answered. When I finally DID get a real person by phone, he said I had to confirm the cancellation by (real, snail) mail, or by FAX. So finally after a FAX and an extra year or two of fees, I got rid of them. Then I learned all about how tough it was transferring the domain to another host. But that wasn't their doing. Collapse

My saga:
April 27th: mark my domain for transfer to a new domain.
April 28th: update my contact email for my domain through the control panel. I received an automated response that it would be in whois w/in 24 hours.
April 30th: call support, told incident "escallated" w/in "that department." Told to wait 24-48 hours for whois to be updated.
May 2, 4, 5: emails to support detailing problem and requesting status met with, "I'm sure they're working on it."
May 8: call support. Told incident "escallated" w/in "that department." Absolute refusal to let me speak with a manager despite the fact that I was told *exactly* the same thing I was told 2 weeks prior. Told to wait 24-48 hours for whois to be updated.
I have not received emails in 2 weeks and am beginning to think I just lost my domain. Collapse

AWFUL when Attempting To Cancel
I was with this company for years -- must have registered 20 domains. BUT every time I tried to either cancel automatic renewal or cancel a registration and THEN the problems start. First, it will take you forever to find the link to the OTHER site you have to sign in on to cancel -- do a search. Next, it looks like you'll be cancelling everything instead of one domain. Then if you find the right place -- you're only able to cancel entirely -- though a faded option is to just turn off auto renewal. Try removing a credit card -- can't be done! Repeated unanswered e-mails. On hold forever -- never did pick-up. RUN! Collapse

Avoid 1&1 Like the PLAGUE
I registered lots of domains with them a few years ago. Remember the big "free .info" bonanza all over the net in 2005? Well I used 1&1 for that. I got lots of super great .infos along with a few cheap but great .coms that I was using. I also used their hosting. Well, I'm living proof that you should never host with your registrar. First came the renewals. I decided not to renew most of my domains. So before I got a chance to cancel... a full MONTH+ they mass renewed them without my consent. And no, there was no "auto renew" option in the control panel. I was stuck with hundreds of dollars of expenses I couldn't afford. And what they do is, if there is ANY snag (the SMALLEST snag) they will lock you out of your WHOLE account. So if you have a dispute with one .com, they will lock you out of EVERYTHING. Avoid them at all costs. I was not a deadbeat customer. I tried to resolve this. They get you by charging you well before is reasonable for you to react. Oh, I lost everything. I lost it ALL. All my favorite domains and my website. I just couldn't afford to renew everything. I fell for it like so many people. Lots of services and a low price. But their customer service is TERRIBLE, they have phone outtages, and they dupe you. That's why I put their price as "satisfactory", because although upfront the price is cheap, the headaches and the trickery they use takes more cash out of your wallet. >:( Collapse

They would not reactivate my accounts until I renewed the names. This is extortion! I have never had anything like this happen to me in over 10 years of registering domain names. When I called their customer service to discuss this ridiculous policy, the rep promptly hung up the phone on me! Amazing! Save yourself the aggravation and spend your money elsewhere. Do not be suckered by their low price and ubiquitous advertising. You have been warned!!! Collapse

From Day 1 i was having problems as it would only let me transfer over some but not all of my domains.
After a period of time my other domains were expiring so i decided to try to transfer over 5 domains. I sucessfully transferred over 2, but thiey dropeed the ball on the other three.
It seems that they outsource their tech support because I spent a few days being frustrated by their lack of understanding of What happened in the transfer attemt and were giving me answers that didn't even concern the questions so I thought maybe I would call in and ask. I again was given bad information and had to go over and over what I was calling in about...And then I was told that I had changed the information on my domains in the other registrar and thats why it didn't changed over to which I responded that no i didn't but it was 1 and 1 dropping the ball and not following thru with the transfer that it expired with the other domain and I would have to wait two months before i could attempt to transfer them again.
At that point I told them they just lost a customer Collapse

They have NO customer service to speak of and you have to call them for everything. I hosted and registered names with them and it was the biggest pain I've ever dealt with. Also teh interface for the domain names stinks. You can't do anything via the interface...again you have to call them and hope the guy on teh other side understands what you want because sometimes I had to call back 3 times on the same issue.

I got a .com domain, free domain private registration, a 1 GB email account, and a multi-page WYSIWIG site builder, $600 in free software and more all for just $5.99 a year! What a killer business/advertising investment. Cheaper than my weekly Lunch bill.
The ordering process and management interface for 1&1 domain customers may still leave a little to be desired. But it does work, its not too hard to learn and it is cheap.
Ok they might not be perfect for bulk-buyers right not, but if you just want a domain, or if you need hosting and want to get up to 5 free domains...1&1 beats the competition in my book.
Oh yeah, they're giving away 5 free .info domains right now ;-) Collapse

1&1 quietly hijacks your domains
I have quite a few domains and was looking for a
new registrar. I decided to try 1and1 because
of their low cost.
The first thing I noticed, after entering my
domains in their system, was that their control
panel APPEARS easy to use on the surface, but
once you actually get into it there are a lot of
ambiguous areas. Like, for example, on the DNS
screen the "RESET" button does NOT mean to put
your settings back to the way they were; it
means to TRANSFER your DNS to 1&1. It reminded
me of the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland
who said, "A word means exactly what I choose it
to mean...". Anyway, I thought I could figure
it out and probably live with it once I learnt
their meanings.
When my domains actually got transferred to 1&1
I received the first shock -- 1and1 had HIJACKED
my domains! They took domains that were part of
an active business, that had been in use for
almost 4 years, and pointed them to THEIR DNS
and, from there, to an advertising page telling
people this was a new domain and how they could
benefit from 1&1. Geeperz, was I hopping mad!
Shock #2: I tried to change the DNS settings
back to my own servers. I have used many
registrars over the years, and this process
always results in an immediate change. As soon
as I check the WHOIS record I see the new
information. Not so with 1&1! After ten
minutes I wrote a letter to tech support asking
why my domain changes had not taken effect.
Searching their web site FAQs I cam across a
one-liner FAQ that said DNS transfers take 24 to
48 hours! What the..???? So my customer's web
site was down for a total of four days (ouch!),
and then finally went back to the proper
settings.
1&1 never answered my question about why the DNS
transfer took so long. In fact, I wrote them a
total of three times and they did not answer any
of my e-mails.
Obviously 1and1 is not my registrar anymore and
I certainly would never recommend them to
anyone. Their service is lousy to non-existant,
which is a rotten deal at any price.
